Methods for the Application of Programmable Logic Devices in Electronic Protection Systems for High Energy Particle Accelerators

Electronic Machine Protection systems (MPS) for high energy accelerators, such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Organisation for Nuclear research (CERN) bear all the hall-marks of an electronic safety system. Electronic systems protecting equipment are used to reduce risks by implementing high reliability electronics, giving a high mean-time between unsafe failure, and both require a very high availability.
