X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) studies of Ni and Pd nanograins embedded in carbonaceous layers were performed basing on the K edge spectra of nickel and palladium respectively. A series of samples containing various doses of Ni or Pd doped to the layers during the deposition of PVD method and next after annealed in argon was studied. The crystalline structure and chemical constitution of formed nanograins was found dependent on the metal dose and size of nanograins. They change along the series from those similar to bulk structure of amorphous non-metallic (mainly oxide and/or carbide bonds) towards metallic crystalline form. The Fourier Transform fitting analysis showed for all samples a significant reduction of the range of atomic order around metal atoms as compared to appropriate bulk materials.
