In this paper we present field emission from carbon nanotubes (CNTs) layers prepared on etched silicon. Si surface was covered with hillocks-like structures due to this wet etching. CNTs exhibit very good emissive properties and they are perspective materials for electrons sources. Our layers were obtained in two-step method consisting of Physical Vapor Deposition and Chemical Vapor Deposition. We used silicon plate as substrates which were etched in different conditions.
We measured the current – voltage characteristics and we interpreted emission from the film using Fowler-Nordheim theory. In addition, we performed a short-term stability measurement of emission. Different types of etched substrates possess different adhesive properties toward deposited layers. Depending on technological parameters of Si etching the emission currents have different intensity and the electric field thresholds.
