Performance evaluation of the Intra compression in the video coding standards

The article presents a performance comparison of the Intra prediction in the various video coding standards, including MJPEG, VP8, VP9, H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC. Each of the selected standards is described shortly, allowing evaluation of the employed techniques. The compression efficiencies for all encoders, which were obtained for a set of sample video sequences, are presented using the BS-PSNR and BD-RATE metrics with the encoding times. According to these results H.265/HEVC provides significant bit-rate savings at the expense of the long encoding times, while VP9 may be regarded as a compromise between the efficiency and computational complexity.
